Thayer Computing Projects

In between keeping all things computing running at Thayer, we always have several projects in the works. Here’s a quick overview of projects we’re currently working on or planning. In no particular order…

Email and collaboration tools

Dartmouth’s Council on Computing has constituted a task force to determine Dartmouth’s requirements for future email and collaboration tools. Thayer School’s Director of Computing Services is on the task force and seeks your thoughts on the subject.

Computers and Printers at Thayer are a significant source of electricity and resource consumption. Jordan has been working at reducing electricity use in the Windows lab (see his recent blog post here).

Printing Over Wireless: Important Announcement

Due to recent changes to Dartmouth wireless networking and limitations on one of our print servers, wireless printing for Mac and Linux is only available from Dartmouth Secure and Dartmouth Wireless Portal. You will be unable to print if connected to Kiewit Wireless.

All Windows PCs and Mac & Linux computers connected to the wired network are not affected.

Instructions for connecting to the new wireless networks can be found at our help pages.

Public printing changes

The Computing Services team has made a few changes that we hope will improve the printing services provided at Thayer School:

  • In “room” 201 (the balcony overlooking the great hall), we have added a dedicated transparency printer, 201-color-trans. This means that there are now two dedicated, high speed color printers in 201: 201-color-paper and 201-2-color-paper.
  • We have put a color printer in room M210 named m210-color. Both m210-color and m210 now use a print release station (located next to the printers) to release print jobs as required.
