If you are already browsing the web with the excellent browser Firefox, do yourself a favor and install Adblock Plus… especially if you are stuck on dial-up or satellite internet at home.
Adblock Plus not only hides annoying ads, but also prevents them from even being downloaded. You can block ads by hand by right-clicking on the ad and selecting, “Adblock Image”. Or better yet, you can subscribe to a filter list and let someone [snip...]
In the past few months a huge change has occurred with Thayer School servers… now, most of them are virtual. Poof!
While the change isn’t very visible to the community, for us Systems Administrators (Jared, Jordan, and Matt Dailey), the change is significant.
Virtualization allows us to run multiple “computers” on one physical computer. So we can easily run independent servers for web site, email, databases all on one real server.
The short story is that we now have over a dozen virtual servers in production which has allowed us to save space, lower our hardware expenses, reduce electrical and cooling usage, ease backup, and improve reliability.

Dear Thayer Community,
Network Services has scheduled network outages for Saturday, 9/15.
From 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM they will router upgrades up-campus will shut down Dartmouth’s Internet connection.
Between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM they will upgrade the core router in Murdough which will improve network bandwidth to this end of campus. The outage will affect both phone and network in Cummings and MacLean.
If this will cause undue hardship, please let us know ASAP.
